For a live gig, the venue was small, intimate and quirky. The stage was so low that it really added to the intimacy and engagement with the performers. The seating was picnic benches and a few old fashioned round tables with table cloths (a great touch!) and the walls were covered with beautiful and colourful art. This is one of the nicest gig venues we’ve ever been to.
The place had an authentic hipster feel to it and, being in Shoreditch, there was nothing pretentious or fake about it. No vogue, fashionista hipster vibe here. This was real and engaging.
Me and My Friends
The gig at The Rich Mix, Shoreditch was an album launch for their latest release Look Up.
The band arrived on stage in their trademark cardboard animal heads, a quintet of giraffe, gorilla, leopard, bear and toucan. In no particular order, a drummer, lead guitar, rhythm guitar/lead singer, cello and clarinet. The paper animal masks may sound a little lame on paper – but you had to be there. They were pretty cool in real life and suited the gig and the venue to a tee. It was a perfect choice for this album launch. Hats off to whoever organised this.
The sixty person crowd had a great time and heard a raw sound with no dramatics (obviously apart from the animal heads). The instruments and quality of the performance did all the work. Between songs, the band chatted with the audience which both added to, and was aided by, the intimacy of the gig.
The set was 9 tracks, so the full album:
High as the Sun
Look Up (Title Track)
Promise Me This Much
You Read My Mind
All of This I Know
Our favourite track was You Read My Mind, but the whole set had the audience up dancing – a testament to the quality of the instruments as this is not a gig or band that relied on vocals. The 1 and ½ hour set got everyone moving.
In all, this band transported us to a really nice bar, somewhere exotic and warm with a holiday feel, surrounded by cool people. In Shoreditch. Brilliant. One of the best gigs we've been to for some time.
